Finding the slow admin query with Query Monitor

A slow admin usually has one clear culprit. Query Monitor finds it in minutes.

When the orders or products screen takes seconds to load, guessing wastes time. Query Monitor shows exactly where the time goes.

Where to start

  1. Open the slow screen and sort the Queries panel by time.
  2. The Component column shows which plugin or theme each query came from.
  3. Check the Duplicate Queries panel for queries repeated inside a loop.

Common patterns

  • Queries on meta_value with no suitable index.
  • posts_per_page = -1 on admin screens.
  • Synchronous calls to an external API on every page load.

On production, enable Query Monitor for administrators only, and deactivate it after debugging.

Once you’ve found the culprit

Rewrite the query, cache the result in the object cache with a sensible expiry, or hand the heavy work to Action Scheduler.
